The diversity and creativity that The Sin-Tones have managed to map out in only 25 minutes and 51 seconds of Surf-o-Ghetti! is nearly unbelieveable. I wouldn’t expect to be taken on a musical “journey” in such a short space of time, but this trio really pulls it off:
The following notes are from the Fading Ways label press-kit:
The Sin-Tones are a Toronto based trio that play roots rock and roll with a heavy emphasis on twangy surf, rockabilly and western swing. The band features the writing team of Michael Hussey (vocals, guitar, organ) and Jo Bradley (vocals, bass) with Jim Clark on drums.
Their first CD “The Sin-Tones” was recorded live in 4 hours. It was released through pop culture icons Gutter Press and charted very well on Canadian college radio. The CD features the first ever surf version of Gordon Lightfoot’s “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”. The Sin-Tones released their second CD “Surf-o-Ghetti!” through Canadian indie label Fading Ways.
Live The Sin-Tones are energetic, irreverent and a hell of a lot of fun. Their style uniquely blends twangy surf instrumentals with huge Ennio Morricone style vocals, classic movie and TV themes, western swing and rockabilly.
Media Coverage:
“They roar through rockabilly flavoured rave-ups that are chock full of Iggy Pop swagger and trailer park humor. The result is a blend of surf, rockabilly and garage that mixes Jerry Cole and the Spacemen with the Cramps.” –Matthew Crosier, CBC Radio
“Galloping cowboy surf with cactus shredding un-chapped shins… shredding glissandos and an amphetamine spaghetti western nervousness.” –Phil Dirt, Reverb Central
“Campy space-surf psychobilly with just the right dash of Cramps style hiccuppy growl – The Sin-Tones could be the saviours of Canuck rock.” –John Sekerka, Thrust Magazine
“The Sin-Tones: part Cramps, part Morricone, part country, but, in the end, all trashy.” –The Mouth, Chartattack
“Pop it into the player and, presto! Surfabilly funhouse. Imagine The Ventures, fronted by Sleepy LaBeef.” –Todd Paul, Chronogram
“Dripping in the Californian surf instrumental sound with the tiniest shades of rockabilly, this trio’s debut recording makes for an interesting and eclectic half-hour. It appears this album, which sounds as if it could’ve been made at the legendary Sun Studios, is screaming to be a motion picture soundtrack.” –Jason MacNeil, All Music Guide
“The Sin-Tones may be the closest thing to the much lamented if not totally ignored Dik Van Dykes we’ve had up here in the Arctic. And dang it, it’s been too long. Not only does this giddy-up trio churn out rather impressive originals (”Jesus Had a Gibson”), but they also have impeccable taste when butchering other’s material. A revved up instrumental version of “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” will surely wake Gordie Lightfoot from the dead. A swank take on the “Mary Tyler Moore” theme brings it all home.” –John Sekerka, Thrust Magazine
“(The Sin-Tones are) a fun three-piece combo that unspool gargantuan waves of Dick Dale-indebted rockabilly surf.” –Kim Hughes, NOW Magazine
“The girl in this band is a cutie and she can really play. Overall, this is a strong band.” –Krista Lamb, ChartAttack
“The Sin-Tones core their way into a well veined ore of rock ‘n roll but manage to pull it off with a real sense of sexy vigour all their own.” –Tim McGregor, The Drag
