Unfortunately, it seems the only way these neighbourhoods are revitalized is via some form of gentrification. The poorest in New Orleans have essentially had their property stolen away from them by speculators who may have profitted handsomely. Now with the economic meltdown underway, who knows? But you can count on the poor getting screwed as usual.

rugrat...

first of all, i really like the new look of your site! nice choice.

secondly, s.f.'s hunter's point today, is probably the worst, and most crime ridden of the remaining housing projects in that fair city. these are projects that were built during the late 50's and early 60's, and have been left to rot since then. the city has conveniently washed its hands of h.p., except for the police presence. admittedly, african-american culture has changed dramatically since the 60's. gone is black pride. h.p. today serves only to showcase the worst of the young black american nation that glorifies violence as the only way to make themselves heard. unfortunately, many don't really have anything to say, other than to express their anger and rage. and in this case, it's largely by no fault of their own. living in the rundown squalor of h.p. would take a toll on anyone subjected to that level of neglect and abandonment. there are few markets, no banks, & no future for the residents. left dangling as they are, the area has then become a vortex of poverty and crime. retailers and other business refuse to expand into the neighborhood where they could provide jobs, security, and an opportunity for its residents to rise above. but finally in 2009, the city does have its eye on h.p., but not for the betterment of its inmates unfortunately. the city & county of s.f. recently purchased the former u.s. naval shipyards that were located in h.p. during the big one, and decomissioned in the 70's or 80's. it's prime real estate, and the city wants to sell it off to the highest bidding developer. the current h.p. projects certainly won't fit into that picture, and will undoubtedly be raised. what will become of those that live there today? god only knows.

lastly, thanks for the music. sweet!
