Bent Creek Jazz

The Asheville Jazz Orchestra

Well folks, here’s my second musing from Bent Creek Pass as promised. I had hoped to give you a broader selection of jazz offerings that I scooped up at Mister K’s in Asheville, NC, but Freddie took up such a big slice o’time on this compilation that they will have to wait their turn for another project. The Hubbard selections are top notch, so you will not be disappointed. It’s still hard to believe he’s dead – another great one gone. You can listen to the bonus track: Z Train, by Steve Coleman & The Five Elements in the player below:

If you are interested in checking out the jazz scene in Asheville, you can review the local band listings in the Mountain Xpress newspaper and even grab some free downloads as well. There are several clubs featuring jazz in Asheville, but the main downtown venue is Tressa’s. There are also two local organizations working to advance jazz performance, composition, and education: The Asheville Jazz Council, which partners with the Asheville Jazz Orchestra (above photo), and the Western North Carolina Jazz Society.
