My wife and I are hosting our annual harvest dinner party tomorrow night, and while she does some fine-tuning of her menu, I am dipping into the sauce a bit as I flip through the crates looking for some cool jazz and instrumental grooves to spin for the evening.
I am making a conscious effort to keep things lively this year. Too much red wine and light jazz can put the brakes on a good party, and so I have been setting aside some of the tastier slabs o’wax to keep our backbones loose: Grant Green and Jimmy Smith from the old school; John Scofield and Medeski, Martin, and Wood from the new. I might even slip in some Xavier Cugat, Henry Mancini, or some crazed bongo madness!
A couple of our guests are rabid fans of the Beastie Boys, so I will be sure to dish up a few tracks from their 1996 soul-groove compilation: The In Sound From Way Out.
