Jazz After Hours with George Benson

This smokin’ live Benson session was pressed to CD in Australia by Performax in 2005. Like most budget-line issues, there are no details on the session date, but it would appear that this was recorded on a Sunday afternoon in 1973 at the New Jersey Club Casa Caribe. There are other more complete issues of this set that lead me to believe this.

The technical flaws of the recording are not terrible and are certainly overcome by the excellent performance, as all the players have their chops in fine form. The rhythm section includes pianist Mickey Tucker (previously with Sonny Stitt, Art Blakey and Junior Cook), bassist George Duvivier (who recorded with Bud Powell and Lester Young) and drummer Al Harewood, who played in a myriad of ensembles, but most notably on Blue Note sessions with Lou Donaldson and Grant Green.

If you like what you hear on this recording, be sure to download Benson’s Cookbook album from 1966.
