By the time Addicted To Love became a number 1 hit and a much-parodied MTV video staple, Robert Palmer [19 January 1949 - 26 September 2003] already had several solo albums under his belt – albums which had been mostly ignored or forgotten. Only Secrets survived as an FM radio staple, due to the hard-hitting hits Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor) and Jealous.
The great irony of the stardom that came several years later with Power Station (a collaboration with Duran Duran’s Taylor brothers) was that Palmer’s best work was already well out of focus in the rearview mirror.
He might have been a long way from the foggy shores of his home in England, but Palmer’s brand of blue-eyed soul was most convincing. Foreshadowed in the second Vinegar Joe album, Rock ‘n’ Roll Gypsies, the southern-fried funk of The Meters, Little Feat, and the Muscle Shoals Horns (along with a who’s who of southern session players) laid the foundation for what I believe will prove to be Palmer’s most enduring work.

RP had fun electrosynthetically blending genres/cultures with his blue eyed stylings in soul/funk groovaliciousness – play first then last track back to back – an enjoyable surprise, track 5 is largely why I have the LP. You can hear how Powerstation evolved I think.
The song “Get Outside” has been in my head ever since I put this mix together:
If your vision is holding you
If you can’t fathom out what to do
If you can’t read what you write
If you find yourself waking in the middle of the night
Get outside
Get outside
Get outside
If you can’t decide what you wanna do
If you can’t stand what people say to you
If you can’t see when your eyes are open wide
If you ask yourself what your doing and there’s no reply
Get outside
Get outside
Get outside
If you’re feeling crowded or out of tune
Yeah
I’ve been trying to swing this cat all day
But there ain’t no room to move
Get outside
Get outside
Get outside
If your vision is holding you
If you can’t understand what people say to you
If you can’t see when your eyes are open wide
If you ask yourself what you’re doing and there’s no reply
Get outside
Get outside
Get outside
Get outside
Get outside
Get outside
Get outside
Get outside
Get outside
Get outside
The situation is
Outside
Get outside
Get outside
Get outside
