As I noted last week with my Home For Christmas compilation and podcast, I got stuck working Christmas again this year, and so I decided to squeeze in one final podcast as a follow up to my Working Christmas Blues compilation from 2010.
The opening track from the Atomic Cafe is a twisted reminder that the threat of nuclear holocaust has not gone away. But while military-industrial-complex shills like Stephen Hadley are busy whipping up false fears about Iran, it’s the countries that already have nukes that should be worrying us.
Woodie Guthrie and Little Country Giants remind us that Jesus was a working class hero and someone who actually built things, which is more than we can say for the G20 bankers who are forcing austerity upon the world after accepting what now appears to be trillions in bailout money.
Bobby Charles’ Save Me Jesus is just as relevant now as it was in 1972:
They got sisters and brothers
Fighting ‘gainst one another
They got dreams and schemes and build war machines
And try to out-do each other
We got children that are starving
But that don’t bother them
They’re much to busy getin’ rich
To worry about our little childrenSave me Jesus!
Save me Jesus!
Save me Jesus!
Jesus save me
From this god forsaken placeThey got satellites and space ships
Flying ‘cross the universe
They killed before
And they’ll kill again
Just so they can say they’re first
They build monuments and churches
And things I aint seen yet
And they’ve signed a law with their autographs
In case you might forgetSave me Jesus!
Save me Jesus!
Save me Jesus!
Jesus save me

I took a stroll through my blogroll to see what others were up to this holiday season and found a few treats to add to this playlist. Voodoo Funk has another 45-rpm re-issue out: The Soul Of Christmas / Groovy Christmas And A Happy New Year, and DJ Double-K is celebrating Christmas in Parkdale 2011 (also check out his mixes from 2009 and 2007). If you are looking for something a little less funky, Brice Fuqua has put together a compilation of classic Christmas songs from the 1940s, including: The Christmas Song, Winter Wonderland, Here Comes Santa Claus, Sleigh Ride and Santa Claus Is Coming To Town. Performers include: Bing Crosby, The Andrews Sisters, Frank Sinatra, The Boston Pops, Gene Autry and Doris Day.
Star Maker Machine blog put together this Christmas Playlist:
